Welcome to Tricia’s Patio

Tricia’s Patio of Featured Movies is dedicated to our Aunt who always shared her love of Classic Cinema with us. She was not only our Stanford University Grad, but our very own Miss Marple! We had movie trivia every weekend!

We will periodically highlight various movie recommendations of her choosing.

Welcome to our Easter Day Selections of films
BEN-HUR (1959)

Charlton Heston, Stephen Boyd

Runtime: 3 hrs 32 min

The original book, play and 1925 movie were titled “Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ.” This epic focuses on a man whose family is torn apart by a jealous ex-friend seeking to “climb the ladder” in ancient Rome. Judah Ben-Hur focuses his energy on staying alive during his enslavement so he can exact revenge on his captor.  But a chance meeting with Jesus Christ on the way to Calvary touched him and changed his life. The movie hits all the touchpoints of the rise of Christianity and the Roman effort to squelch it. Despite it’s excessive length, you cannot help but be enthralled, especially by the famous chariot scene. Having lots of snacks on hand would be a good call.

The Robe (1953)

Richard Burton, Jean Simmons

Runtime: 2 hrs 15 min

This was my Easter favorite when I was younger (not just because I’m a fan of Richard Burton), but because like Ben-Hur it focuses on how “meeting” Christ changed the lives of those he met in ways they were compelled to try and comprehend. A Roman tribune is ordered to command soldiers to carry out the crucifixion of Christ, but guilt consumes him afterwards and the Robe is the symbol of his constant torment.  This drives him to seek an understanding of who Christ was, and what that means to him.

Steel Magnolias (1989)

Sally Field, Julia Roberts, Shirley Maclaine, Dolly Parton

Runtime: 1 hr 57 min

This is not per se, an Easter movie. But there is an Easter egg hunt at the end that highlights how these strong women navigated their various trials and tribulations, and still manage to move on with their lives after a tragic loss that affects everyone, with a deep appreciation that life goes on. The title has famously implied “chick flick”, but the men in this film provide context as they also reflect in their own ways how this loss has affected them. Hankies and popcorn will probably be needed.

Easter Parade  (1948)

Fred Astaire, Judy Garland

Runtime: 1 hr 43 min

This movie actually has little to do with Easter, but its light and charming with a great cast, lots of music and dancing, and fabulous clothes. Based on the famous New York City Easter Parades that began in the 1890s (and interestingly, still continue until this day), it details what happens to a famous nightclub performer when his partner walks out on him right before Easter and he’s determined to find a replacement by next year’s Easter parade. It takes him awhile (a long while) to figure out that he can’t re-make her in the image of his former partner. But when he does finally “get it”, things begin to happen for them, and to him. Have fun.

Welcome to our Valentine's Day Selections of films
THE DARK CORNER (1946)

Lucille Ball, Mark Stevens, Clifton Webb

Runtime: 1 hr 39 min

We all know Lucille Ball, the gifted comedian from I Love Lucy, but you will develop new appreciation for her in this drama where she’s a wisecracking secretary to a handsome private eye being expertly framed for murder.

HOW TO STEAL A MILLION (1966)

Runtime: 2 hrs 3 min

Audrey Hepburn, Peter O’Toole

The 60's produced a lot of fun romantic comedies – this one includes a heist. Gather your favorite snacks and watch Peter O’Toole show Audrey Hepburn how to “give Givenchy the night off” and steal back something that belongs to her.

NINE TO FIVE (1980)

Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, Dolly Parton

Runtime: 1 hr 49 min

This outrageous comedy makes a bold statement about working in corporate America, and manages to do with a dead body to boot. Dolly Parton’s Grammy-winning song should have also won the Oscar for best original song – it’s a catchy number.

THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA  (2006)

Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway

Runtime: 1 hr 49 min

An aspiring journalist lands her “dream job” as assistant to the editor of the biggest fashion magazine in New York. Learning on the job doesn’t quite describe her path, but the education she gains is invaluable, in more ways than one.

Happy Halloween

Aunt Tricia’s October Picks for great films.

Welcome to our Spooky Selections of Halloween films
Dracula (1931)

Runtime 1 hr 15 min

Bela Lugosi, Helen Chandler

Tod Browning’s masterpiece is the king of horror movies. Mr Lugosi’s performance in this presentation of the Bram Stoker classic is haunting, and the start or maybe restart of a genre, somewhat eclipsing silent classics like Nosferatu.

Frankenstein (1931)

Runtime: 1 hr 10 min

Colin Clive, Boris Karloff

Dr Henry Frankenstein is obsessed with playing God, reanimating dead tissue. The tortured monster that he creates brings the Mary Shelley book to life.

The  Wolfman (1941)

Runtime: 1 hr 10 min

Claude Rains, Lon Chaney, Jr

An estranged son returns to his father’s castle and starts courting a local beauty, but he discounts the local folklore about a wolfman, much to his detriment.

The Thing
From Another World  (1951)

Runtime: 1 hr 27 min

Kenneth Stoney, Margaret Sheridan

A tongue in cheek thriller about a visitor from another world wreaking havoc in the arctic.

Them! (1957)

Runtime: 1 hr 34 min

James Arness, James Whitmore, Edmund Gwen

Atomic bomb testing in the Arizona desert produces giant ants that causes panic in the streets.

The Haunting (1963)

Runtime: 1 hr 52 min

Julie Harris, Claire Bloom, Richard Johnson

Dr Markway attempts to prove a house with a history of strange, tragic deaths is definitely haunted by inviting a group of people touched by psychic phenomena. Forget the blood and gore of the Hammer Films of the late 50’s, 60’s and 70’s; your imagination does the hard work here.

The Abominable Dr Phibes (1971)

Runtime: 1 hr 34 min

Vincent Price, Joseph Cotton

A truly ingenious and stylish tale unfolds as Dr Phibes wreaks vengeance on those who failed to save the life of his beloved wife after an accident.
